Just a few years ago, “copying” a work consisted mainly of photocopying of literary works, or dubbing over a cassette tape. The process was slow and, correspondingly, easier to police. In this, the digital age, “copying”, or reproduction, happens in a millisecond and a single work by an author can trail a blaze across the internet through social media across a myriad of platforms in a very short time. Under existing copyright laws generally, every time a work is “reproduced”, the owner’s consent must be obtained. Many want copyright laws to be more forward thinking and flexible than before. Yet media companies remain interested in how they can assert the rights they have against online piracy and have devised ever more advanced methods of monitoring sites for infringing content.

How do we strike a balance between these explosive differences?

Aims

  • Fundamentals of copyright laws
  • Legal dimensions of the digital age
  • Business dealing in this brave new world
  • Significance of copyright
  • Protecting the creations
  • Translating the creations into profitable assets
