Memoir Poetry can be a powerful tool of self-expression for children. It helps them introspect, look back at their own lives with fresh eyes and a new interest and at the same time remain true to themselves for as a genre Memoir Poetry does not demand paying allegiance to a particular poetic style or school of thought. The inherent flexibility of the genre allows a child to explore his imagination with few restraints and instils in him a confidence and a new motive for writing.

Using this as a basic premise, the workshop will allow teachers and facilitators to acquire the necessary tools and techniques for helping students improve their literary style and explore more creative ways of expressing themselves. Literary style can be defined as the author's word choice, sentence structure, figurative language, and sentence arrangement which work together to establish mood, images, and meaning in the text.

  • Understanding Memoir Poetry as a genre, distinguishing the classic from the contemporary.
  • Basic skills of literary criticism (structural & contextual analysis, central idea & supporting details, inferences & conclusions)
  • An introduction to a selected batch of Memoir Poetry from across the world (including post-colonial Asian literature)
  • Working with students to put together the book of ideas
  • Working with figures of speech, meter and rhyme
  • Exercises for vocabulary enrichment
  • Exploring various verse forms
