Reading works best when it is used as a tool for engaging children in thinking and dialoguing about a topic. A great topic for children to think and dialogue about is happiness. This session is inspired by the emerging field of Positive Psychology, which is gaining much support from teachers and other educators under the name of Positive Education. Positive Education is an approach to education that draws on Positive Psychology’s emphasis on individual strengths and personal motivation to promote learning. This session begins by introducing Positive Education and engaging participants in activities to boost their own positive outlook. The main part of the session allows participants to explore how to combine Positive Education with reading activities. This workshop is suitable for teachers and those reading to pre-school and primary school children.
1. Understand Positive Education and how to apply it in your own life
2. Consider how Positive Education fits with reading instruction
3. Experience several techniques for integrating Positive Education in reading instruction
4. Have time to plan your own activities
