Maalan

Maalan is a writer-journalist, with the distinction of leading the premier Tamil journals namely India Today (Tamil), Dinamani, Kumudam and Kungumam, as its Editor. Currently, he is Advisor at the School of Media studies at SRM University and is Editor of Puthiya Thalaimurai, a Tamil weekly. As a writer, he has 13 titles to his credit. His first collection of short stories Kallirku Kizhum Pookkal (Flowers beneath Stones) was a book of study on contemporary Tamil writing for Post-graduate students at Madurai Kamaraj University when it was launched in 1980. Another short story collection Marudal Varum was awarded the best book of the year in 1989 by the Vice Chancellor of Central University Pondicherry, which later became a book of study for Tamil students at Kerala University. His poems have found a place in the anthology of protest poetry, Voices of Emergency, compiled by Prof John Oliver Perry of Tufts University, USA and in the Anthology of Tamil Poetry by Sahitya Academy of India. His stories were translated into English and to other Indian languages and have appeared in the leading magazines such as Illustrated Weekly of India, Decan Herald, Vipula and Mathru Bhoomi. He holds a Masters Degree in Journalism from University of Florida with specialisation in Advanced Editing.
